Oral Hygiene

It is important to maintain good oral hygiene during your treatment. Brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent cavities and gum problems during and after your braces. Plaque and other substances tend to stick to the braces if not cleaned properly. This may result in permanent white “spots” on the teeth that may occur from decalcification from poor hygiene. We may suggest that you schedule an appointment with your general dentist for a cleaning every four to six months while in braces. Brushing your teeth three times a day, flossing at least twice a day, and using your proxabrush twice a day will help to keep your braces and your teeth clean. We also suggest that you use a fluoridated mouthwash, such as ACT, and rinse before going to bed each night to further protect your teeth. Please be sure to watch our comprehensive oral hygiene video to “brush up” on how to take care of your braces.

It is important to remember that your diet is an important aspect of your oral hygiene. Avoid hard, sticky and chewy foods with your braces. Hard foods can break or damage wires and brackets. Sticky foods can get caught between brackets and wires. Additionally, minimize sugary foods as they cause tooth decay and related problems.

If you have any questions about proper oral hygiene, please make sure to ask any member of our clinical staff at your next appointment.
