Should I wear a mouth guard with orthodontic braces?

That is a question that we get asked here, especially when seasons start and patients are trying out for new sports.

The simple answer is yes……..every person who plays any type of contact sport (football, hockey, field hockey, etc…) should protect  their teeth with mouth guard.   Now for those who are in braces, the type of mouth guard can be a bit tricky.

First of all, during your orthodontic treatment, teeth are moving constantly and your bite is changing.  A custom fit mouth guard is not the best idea due the fact that the guard will want to place your teeth the same position every time.  However, your braces are doing their job and orthodontist is making bends, loops and changes to the appliances to move teeth.  So, after a few days your teeth will not be in the same place as before.

For our patients at Moshiri Orthodontics, we have special orthodontic mouth guards that come in a variety of sizes and colors for our patients.  They can be trimmed around the edges to fit a little better.  However, the design of the mouth guard has space for the braces to fit comfortably in between.

Oral health and safety is always the #1 priority here at Moshiri Orthodontics and keeping your teeth protected during contact sports is just as important.  For more information on your braces or Invisalign treatment, visit moshtransfer.wpengine.com.
