Labor Day Weekend is upon us and many of us are preparing for the holiday festivities such as bbq’s, pool parties, road trips, parades and more.  The “Labor Day” holiday started back in 1882 in New York, dedicated to honoring the achievements of American workers.  It wasn’t until June 28, 1894 that Congress declared “Labor Day” a federal holiday.

As we start our holiday weekend plans, we want to remind our orthodontic patients that it is very important to watch out the foods we eat.  Some of the favorite holiday bbq menu items can cause breakage or damage to orthodontic appliance and braces.  It is also a time when removable appliances, TMJ splints or retainers can get lost, broken or thrown away on accident.

Remember the list of foods to avoid:  carmels, sticky or chewy foods, corn on the cob, ribs, hard chips and apples.  Cut your food into smaller pieces or cut the corn away from the cob.  That will hopefully prevent broken brackets.

Also keep your retainer case close by and ready for use as you move from one activity to another and from one yummy food to the next.  For those in Invisalign, it is just as important to keep your Invisalign retainers and “chewies” close by, as well.

Orthodontic emergencies are sometime unavoidable and we are also there to help our patients.  However, following the instructions given by Drs. Moshiri and the staff will help to reduce any need to schedule an early or emergency visit to our office.

The best rule of thumb when it comes to deciding if you should be eating it or not is this:  If you are worried that the food item is too hard, too large or too sticky….then you may want to rethink it.  We also have the foods list for braces or fixed orthodontic appliances on our website, just in case.

We hope that you have a fun and safe Labor Day weekend and we look forward to seeing you on your next orthodontic appointment.

From the entire team at Moshiri Orthodontics, Happy Labor Day!!!
